President Donald Trump has slapped a hefty 35% tax on all goods manufactured in California, in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s appeals to foreign nations to spare California-made products from retaliatory tariffs, sources have confirmed.
This unprecedented move comes after Newsom’s very public attempts to position California as an ‘independent global state’ in trade negotiations, separate from the rest of the United States.
Trump, not one to shy away from a power play, declared in a press conference that “if California wants to act like a country, maybe they should start paying like one.” The tax targets everything from Silicon Valley tech gadgets to Central Valley almonds, potentially escalating the cost of living in the already pricey state.
Governor Newsom fired back, calling the tax an “attack on the California dream,” while tech moguls and Hollywood executives scrambled to assess the damage, their eyes wide with panic at their now even-more-expensive organic smoothies.
As of press time, Californians were reportedly considering trading in their Teslas for horses, as gas prices might just be the next to skyrocket if Newsom decides to write another letter.
