Memphis Mayor Paul Young was touting the city’s “declining crime” while being stuffed into a car trunk, sources have confirmed.
On June 18, 2025, Young and Police Chief C.J. Davis boasted about crime-fighting successes, but that night, 25-year-old Trenton Abston scaled Young’s neighborhood wall, armed with a Taser, gloves, rope, and duct tape, and forced the mayor into his car’s trunk.
Right-wing X posts mocked Young’s “safe city” claim, with MAGA memes quipping, “Safest spot’s the trunk!”
Critics blasted his “clueless” optimism, citing Memphis’s 2024 violent crime surge and a March incident where Young was grabbed at a restaurant.
Liberals on X blamed “MAGA rhetoric” for inciting the attack.
Abston, charged with kidnapping, told police he aimed to “expose” Young’s crime failures.
As of press time, Young was pitching a “Trunk Escape Safety Seminar” from a fortified bunker.

For somebody that lives so close to Memphis, the mayor has nothing to tout about that once great city. Right now Memphis is a nasty cesspool full of crime. I have to that city to go to the VA hospital and every time I feel like I’m going to have to defend my wife and I. So Mayor, thanks for making me feel safe when I must visit your fair city (NOT)!
