Stupidity our number danger, – 500,000 Americans died needlessly because of our failed response to Covid. Trump launched two financial stimulus plans that allowed 100’s of billions to be stolen from the US Treasury. (And he fired the Inspector Generals that were trying to prevent the theft.) Texans have allowed a couple of billionaires to take over their politics and now the majority of legislators there are answerable to them, not the voters. Our schools are failing, not because of poor teachers or inept administrators, but because parents and communities have failed. (The children of mostly semi-literate or illiterate illegal immigrants are most likely to fail).
We don’t have comprehensive skill training programs to provide all the skilled workers we need from construction to ship building to health care. No is talking about that. We waste 5% of GDP on a cruel, cumbersome wildly inefficient healthcare payment system. (5% is double that amount that businesses pay in federal income tax BTW and more than the difference between the US healthcare system and next most expensive system.) While we have the examples of our campaign against smoking (we didn’t outlaw cigarettes, we advertised against them) and Prohibition which increased drinking and turned minor Italian gangs into serious criminal threats we continue to outlaw recreational drugs and fund horrific criminal enterprises around the world. (e.g., the Taliban financed its war against the US by the sale of opium.)The smart thing to do is have the government sell recreation drugs, use the money for only treatment and propaganda against drugs. But, like so many problems, including climate change, we too stupid to embrace smart solutions.
