NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rent advisor, Tracy Rosenthal, unveiled a revolutionary housing program Tuesday allowing New Yorkers to stop paying rent after presenting one plastic cockroach and sufficient confidence, sources confirmed.
The new Rent-Free Starter Kit includes a fake roach, disposable camera, socialist pamphlet, complaint form, and a laminated card reading, “Landlord? Never heard of him.”
Organizers demonstrated the method on a Manhattan sidewalk.
Step one: place cockroach near radiator.
Step two: photograph cockroach.
Step three: declare capitalism has failed.
Step four: save $2,300 a month forever.
Mamdani praised the approach as affordable housing finally working as intended.
“Why build more apartments when residents can simply stop paying for the existing ones?” he asked.
Critics noted Rosenthal’s advisory role, pointing out she has long described rent as “a social construct with a lease attached,” prompting supporters to argue that housing expertise is best measured by how little housing you personally accept.
Officials then introduced the Three R’s of progressive housing policy: Rats, Roaches, and Rich Parents.
Volunteers began distributing plastic insects across Brooklyn while whispering, “You can live rent-free too.”
Landlords responded by purchasing plastic cats in bulk.
The DSA condemned the move as an arms race.
Rosenthal was later seen praising the initiative, having reportedly lived rent-free for years thanks to her own “starter kit.
As of press time, New York had classified Party City cockroaches as evidence of economic oppression and begun taxing landlords per six-pack sold.
