Billed as an “official diplomatic visit,” the senator’s trip included a brief stop at a small eatery in San Salvador, a photo op with an apron-clad cook, and a quick press statement about “building bridges one delicious bite at a time.” No agreements were signed, and no terrorists were returned, but he did get extra curtido to go.
Critics say the trip was little more than a taxpayer-funded food blog post, while supporters praised his “commitment to international flavor.” When asked about the cost, one aide simply replied, “It was cheaper than flying to San Francisco.”
As of press time, Van Hollen was seen researching flights to Italy after discovering gnocchi wasn’t just a rumor.
